Not America, not Amsterdam, but Barcelona for Van Asten

Van Asten's rapid development is a perfect example of how quickly a footballer can progress. The Mijdrecht-born player made her debut for the Ajax Women first team on Friday, September 5, 2025. Less than a year later, she has signed for the Blaugrana.

Her exceptional talent was already evident at a young age. At the age of nine, Van Asten became Dutch street football champion in a four-versus-four competition. Ten years later, she has secured the dream move to Spain.

Underline her quality
Naturally, those ten years have been filled with stories, countless hours on the training pitch and a tremendous amount of hard work that laid the foundations for her transfer to FC Barcelona. However, the move is not only justified by her performances on the pitch; the numbers from last season's Vrouwen Eredivisie campaign underline her quality as well.

Van Asten's reliability at such a young age is a strength in itself. Combined with her positional awareness and passing ability, she has also played a key role in preventing goals for the Ajax Women. In matches in which Van Asten featured, Ajax conceded just 0.4 goals per game, compared to 2.5 when she was absent.

She played eighteen Vrouwen Eredivisie matches for Ajax and helped the team record twelve victories. Van Asten started all eighteen matches, making her the second-youngest player in the league to start every game in which she appeared.

Passing accuracy
The defender also stands out for her composure in possession. Van Asten attempted 1,006 passes, with 865 finding a teammate. That results in a passing accuracy of exactly 86 per cent. Among Ajax players, only Daniëlle Noordermeer (86.1 per cent) and Jonna van de Velde (88.9 per cent) recorded a higher pass completion rate across an entire season.

A fun detail is that newly arrived Ajax player Anna Knol also features high on that list, boasting a passing accuracy of 88.2 per cent.

All in all, these are statistics Van Asten can be proud of so early in her career. Just like her transfer to one of Europe's biggest clubs: FC Barcelona.

In doing so, she indirectly follows in the footsteps of great Ajax players such as Johan Cruyff, Johan Neeskens, Frank and Ronald de Boer, Jari Litmanen, Richard Witschge and Frenkie de Jong, all of whom once made the move from Ajax to FC Barcelona.
