Miguel Ángel Sánchez Muñoz is the new head coach of Ajax. The 50-year-old Spaniard, known as Míchel, has signed a contract in Amsterdam until 2028. Who is our new coach, who made his debut as a player in La Liga against Johan Cruijff, became a fan favourite at Rayo Vallecano, achieved multiple promotions, and impressed as a manager in the Spanish league?

Míchel was born on October 30, 1975, in the Spanish capital, Madrid. In his hometown, he was picked up by Rayo Vallecano, the Madrid-based club from the Vallecas district. It marked the beginning of a promising career. Just before his 18th birthday, Míchel made his debut for 'Los Franjirrojos' in the Copa del Rey against CD Corralejo. His La Liga debut was a memorable one: on November 28, 1993, he came on as a substitute in a 2–4 home defeat against FC Barcelona. That Barcelona side was coached by Johan Cruijff and featured, among others, Pep Guardiola, Ronald Koeman, Michael Laudrup, and Óscar García.

Fan favourite
Across three spells, Míchel ultimately made over 300 appearances for Rayo Vallecano. He achieved promotion in each of those periods (1994/1995, 1998/1999, 2010/2011) and, in between, played for Almería CF, Real Murcia and Málaga before bringing his playing career to an end in 2012 at the club where it had all begun back in 1993. The fan favourite at Rayo, where he also occasionally wore the captain’s armband, was widely adored by supporters and remained active within the club.

After holding various roles in Rayo Vallecano's academy, he made the step up to the first team in 2017. "He worked his way up through their academy to make the first team, becoming a firm fan favourite, and he enjoyed the best moments of his career at Vallecas. He steps up from the club’s academy, of which he was the director," the Spanish club wrote on their website at the time. Míchel took over from Rubén Baraja in February 2017. A season later, he was immediately successful, winning the league title. With a one-point advantage over SD Huesca, Míchel secured promotion to Spain’s top flight in his first full season in charge.

Promotion with Rayo
The playing style of his teams over the years, based on statistics, revealed a clear pattern. In the 2017/2018 season, Rayo Vallecano recorded 452 passes per match. Of those, 48 per cent were played in their own half, while 85.6 per cent were short passes. On all three of these metrics, only FC Barcelona B and Cultural Leonesa ranked higher. Average possession stood at 54.4 per cent (joint fourth), and his side averaged 7.2 passing sequences of ten or more.

What stands out is the expected goals (xG) profile. The Segunda División champions produced 14.6 shots per game and recorded an expected goals total of 1.7, the highest in the league. Defensively, the team conceded the third-fewest shots on average (behind CA Osasuna and Real Oviedo) and had an expected goals Against figure of 1.1. Finally, in terms of ball recoveries in the final third (4.2) and high turnovers (7.4), Rayo Vallecano ranked second only to CD Numancia. High turnovers refer to regaining possession in the final 40 metres of the pitch, directly leading to an attack or a chance.

His debut at the top level as a manager was less successful. After seven consecutive defeats, the Spanish coach was dismissed in March 2019 at his boyhood club. Míchel returned to work in July 2019, taking charge of SD Huesca. The coach once again won the league in his first season. His numbers were comparable to his title-winning campaign with Rayo Vallecano.

Key figures
SD Huesca recorded 431 passes per match in the 2019/2020 season, with 51 per cent played in their own half and 86.2 per cent classified as short passes, the highest in the league that year. As with Rayo, possession remained central to Míchel’s approach: Huesca averaged 54 per cent per game, the third-highest in the competition. The team also posted an average expected goals figure of 1.4 (third) and an xG per shot of 0.11, the second-best in the league.

His second spell as a La Liga head coach at SD Huesca lasted until January 2021. Six months later, he signed for Girona FC. Míchel achieved promotion for the third time in his first season at a new club. After finishing sixth, he guided Girona to La Liga via the play-offs. In Catalonia, Míchel made his mark. In his first season in the top flight, his side finished 10th, but the 2023/2024 campaign was historic. After 38 matches, Girona ended the season in third place, behind Real Madrid and FC Barcelona, securing UEFA Champions League football at the Estadi Montilivi.

The statistics underlined Girona's exceptional season under the City Football Group club, where only Real Madrid (87) scored more goals than Girona (85). The team also excelled in expected goals, recording 1.89 xG per game (second in La Liga) and an xG per shot of 0.15, the highest in the league.

As in his Rayo Vallecano and SD Huesca years, the data consistently shows Míchel’s emphasis on possession and precise passing. During Girona's standout season, the team averaged 535 passes per match, with 92 per cent short passes and 52 per cent played in their own half. They also produced an average of 15.4 passing sequences of ten or more per game and averaged 57 per cent possession, ranking fourth across La Liga in all these metrics.

These figures are also reflected in the graphic above, which shows all La Liga teams in the 2023/2024 season by playing style. Girona FC used a calm and patient approach in their build-up before launching attacks and creating big chances. The teams ranked first and second that season (Real Madrid and FC Barcelona) were even more patient in their approach to creating opportunities.

Care and patience defined Girona FC's build-up play that season. With 3.7 structured attacks per match (defined as at least ten consecutive passes ending in a shot or a touch inside the opposition box), the team ranked third. Fifteen of those attacks resulted in a goal, the highest total in the league. On April 13, 2024, Girona FC scored against Atlético Madrid following a 24-pass move in which every player touched the ball.

2025/2026
Despite Girona FC being relegated from La Liga last season, their passing numbers stood out. They averaged 467 passes per match (seventh), with 90 per cent short passes (sixth), 49 per cent of passes played in their own half (seventh), and 11.7 sequences of ten or more passes per game on average, also seventh in
La Liga. In terms of possession (50 per cent), Girona FC ranked tenth.

Since Míchel's first La Liga campaign with the club in 2022/2023, Girona FC recorded an average passing accuracy of 86 percent and scored 26 goals following an open-play sequence consisting of 10+ passes, with only FC Barcelona and Real Madrid doing better over that period.

Last season, 25 per cent of Girona FC's attacking touches in La Liga came through the centre, placing them in the middle of the league rankings. In addition, 37 per cent came from the left side and 38 per cent from the right. The heatmaps show where the team operated on the pitch while in possession during the 2025/2026 season.

In total, Míchel was in charge of 221 matches at Girona FC. Looking at his tactical approach in La Liga, he mainly used a 4-2-3-1 system (53 times). He deployed a 4-1-4-1 formation in 30 matches and a 4-4-2 setup on 16 occasions. On some occasions, Míchel also used a three- or five-man defence, although last season in La Liga he did so only twice.

Daley and Donny
At the Spanish club, Míchel has worked in recent years with, among others, Daley Blind and Donny van de Beek. Blind has been playing for Girona FC since the summer of 2023 and has made 108 appearances so far, starting 102 of those under Míchel. Since his debut season, only goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga (9,718) has played more minutes in La Liga than Blind (8,360). He is also the player in Spain’s top flight with the most passes in this period (7,070), the most forward passes (2,716), and the most passes into the final third (1,040). Van de Beek has been at Girona FC since July 2024 and has featured 37 times in the red-and-white shirt under Míchel.

With Míchel's appointment, Ajax will once again be led by a Spanish coach after García. He becomes only the second Spanish manager in the club's history.
