With the same starting team as in the match against FC Groningen, Ajax ruled the first half against Utrecht. Brobbey and Dusan Tadic both got opportunities in the first moments of the match, but the attackers lacked focus in front of the opponent’s goal.
Bergwijn hits the net
Bergwijn managed to score the first goal after twenty minutes of playing in the Johan Cruyff ArenA. A wonderful combination between Tadic and Owen Wijndal on the left wing ended up with the 25-year-old player. He got the ball behind Utrecht goalie Barkas: 1-0.
In the remaining part of the first half, John Heitinga’s team got plenty of further chances to increase the lead to two goals. However, another Ajax goal did not happen, so the players went to the dressing room with a 1-0 lead.
Utrecht equalised early on in the second half. Striker Douvikas turned away from Jorrel Hato and got the ball past Gero Rulli: 1-1. This gave the visiting team the opportunity to slow down its pace again.
Lead thanks to Brobbey
Heitinga’s team decided to increase the pressure on Utrecht’s defense in the remaining part of the match. In the 68th minute, this caused another goal for Ajax. A cross pass done by Hato was passed back by Kudus to Brobbey, who shot the ball into an empty goal: 2-1.
Ajax was clear of trouble in the final minutes of the match. Davy Klaassen added to the score sheet in the extra time, which made the final home match of the season end in a 3-1 victory.
