Ajax also participated in the UEFA Champions League last season. That time around, their group stage opponents were Liverpool, Atalanta Bergamo and FC Midtjylland. In that tournament Ajax reached the quarterfinals, eventually being eliminated by the Italian side, AS Roma.

Ajax has the Europe’s top club competition four times in their history. In the early 1970s, the Amsterdam side even won the tournament three times in a row, from 1971 to 1973. In 1995, Louis van Gaal and his team won the fourth title in Ajax's history.
