Ajax faces Sporting, Dortmund and Besiktas in the UEFA Champions League

Ajax is set to face off against Sporting CP, Borussia Dortmund and Besiktas in the group stage of the UEFA Champions League. This group was the outcome of Thursday evening's draw in Istanbul, Turkey. The first round of the largest European club tournament is scheduled for Tuesday, September 14 and Wednesday, September 15.

Ajax also participated in the UEFA Champions League last season. That time around, their group stage opponents were Liverpool, Atalanta Bergamo and FC Midtjylland. Ajax finished third in the group at the time. In doing so, their journey in the Champions League was over. However, the team did qualify for the following stage of the UEFA Europa League. In that tournament Ajax reached the quarterfinals, eventually being eliminated by the Italian side, AS Roma.

Ajax has the Europe’s top club competition four times in their history. In the early 1970s, the Amsterdam side even won the tournament three times in a row, from 1971 to 1973. In 1995, Louis van Gaal and his team won the fourth title in Ajax's history.
