After losing away to Olympique Marseille in the final minutes (4-3), manager John van 't Schip was satisfied with how Ajax played, but was of course disappointed with the score. "There were quite a few other chances at goal, besides the times we scored. That applied to both Brian Brobbey and Steven Bergwijn. Then we made it 3-3 with just ten men, which I thought was a great goal. But then unfortunately we gave away a penalty."

Ajax were already down to ten men on the pitch when they equalised, then Steven Berghuis was shown the red card. "Steve slid along the touchline and hit the ball. Watch it half a dozen times and it just looks worse each time. They all saw it happen, and then we just have to move on. I thought Berghuis was good in the first half so it's particularly unfortunate this happened."

"I think we played well as a team", the manager continued. "It was a bit pandemonium out there. The game was looking good for us, we came back well with ten men and might even have won, because we had a great opportunity when it was 3-3. There was more to it. It's disappointing to be eliminated. It's a pity we didn't at least draw. It wouldn't have made much difference to the outcome, but it would have helped with morale."
