Steven Bergwijn is back at the club where everything began for him. The Amsterdam-born footballer came to de Toekomst for the first time in the summer of 2005 as a seven-year-old talent. Bergwijn attended Ajax's youth academy until the 2010/2011 season. Eleven years later, he’s returning to his former home a seasoned professional. Time for a look back at six magical childhood years at de Toekomst.

The eventual Dutch international’s first youth football experience was at ASC Waterwijk. But the young talent in Almere was soon noticed by Ajax scouts. Bergwijn joined Ajax in 2005/2006 as a player for the F1 team (the then U9 selection).

That team, the youngest in the academy, turned out to be full of talent. Just a few of Bergwijn’s teammates from that side: Abdelhak Nouri, Vince Gino Dekker and Philippe Sandler. Dennis de Haan – an icon of the Ajax academy who is still active as a coach today -  was his first coach.

In the following seasons, Bergwijn's immense talent developed rapidly. He left Ajax the Amsterdam academy before making it to the first team and continued his development at PSV. He had a number of successful seasons after making his breakthrough into the PSV first team, winning three league titles.

Bergwijn earned a transfer to Tottenham Hotspur in 2020. With a boatload of experience and 22 caps for the national team in his locker, it is time for a return to Amsterdam. Bergwijn will be back at the club in July 2022, where his journey started for real.
