The match in Rotterdam started with chances on both sides. Right before half-time, Wout Weghorst found the net on behalf of Ajax. After a wonderful pass from Youri Baas, Mika Godts crossed the ball to Weghorst, 1-0. In the extra time, Sparta were awarded a penalty after a handball by Baas. Tobias Lauritsen found the net, and the teams went into the dressing room at a 1-1 standing.

Sparta came out of the dressing room full of energy and scored two goals shortly after another. Ajax were 3-1 down and faced another dramatic defeat after losing 4-0 in Marseille on Tuesday. After eight minutes of extra time and the Sparta players down on their last legs, Oscar Gloukh scored the equaliser. Ajax take one point back to Amsterdam.
