Ajax came away with a point from their visit to FC Twente. Ajax took an early lead in Enschede thanks to a Tolu header, but were under pressure for long periods. Rayane Bounida even made it 0-2 in the second half, but Ajax were unable to hold on to that lead. First, Dies Janse unfortunately headed the ball past Marc ter Stegen. In the very final stages, former Ajax player Wout Weghorst converted a penalty: 2-2.

The match started well for Ajax when Tolu put the visitors ahead after just over two minutes. The game was evenly balanced in the opening twenty minutes, but FC Twente gradually took control without creating any clear-cut chances.

Own goal
The pattern of play remained the same in the second half. Ajax were under pressure, but did not capitulate. Bounida even fired Ajax into a 0-2 lead. Ajax were unable to enjoy that advantage for long. From a corner, Janse unfortunately headed the ball past his own goalkeeper.

After a poor back-pass from Sofyan Amrabat, FC Twente looked set to have a big chance, but referee Joey Kooij blew his whistle. He was called over to the monitor for a handball by Weghorst in the FC Twente penalty area. The referee did not agree with the VAR's assessment and instead felt that Ajax had committed a foul.

Final score
Deep into stoppage time, FC Twente eventually equalised following a VAR intervention. It spotted Lucas Rosa briefly pulling Ramiz Zerrouki's shirt. The referee pointed to the spot, after which Weghorst made it 2-2 and set the final score.
