On board the beautiful boat owned by Kip’s parents, there is no shortage of conversation. Hardly surprising, given the amount of history they share at the club and beyond. 'We’re going for a lovely trip on the water,' Kip predicts as Zeeman steps on board. And with an entertaining cruise through the canals, that promise is quickly fulfilled.
Defender Van Asten and forward Kip were already playing together before joining Ajax. 'It goes back a long way,' Van Asten explains. 'It felt like we clicked straight away. We’re very similar in terms of energy and enthusiasm. It definitely helps when you already know each other so well.'
The Ajacieden are also big fans of games, especially board games. 'Renee wins everything,' Kip reveals with a smile, offering a glimpse behind the scenes with the Ajax Women. 'That can be pretty annoying. I’m competitive too, but she wins everything.'
The conversation also turns to the opportunity Van Asten had to attend the prestigious American university, Harvard. She explains why she eventually chose to study Criminology in the Netherlands instead, while continuing her career with the Ajax Women. 'In the end, my heart is in football. That’s where I want to put all my energy. Harvard was an amazing opportunity, but not everyone gets the chance to play for Ajax either. I’m really happy I decided to stay here.'
Kelly then suggests that, naturally, a few games should be played on board the boat. The Ajacieden are challenged to complete several tasks. 'And the loser is in charge of the barbecue later,' Zeeman concludes.
