Haller jokes around with Sangaré during Africa Cup: 'After PSV - Ajax he was quiet'

This week, Sébastien Haller returned from his first African Cup of Nations as a striker for the Ivory Coast. He reached the Round of 16 with his national team. The Ivory Coast were eliminated by Egypt. “As a person and player I have learned a lot.”

The striker was not satisfied with his side’s performance in the end. He would have liked to have progressed further in the tournament. "It was a good experience, but the ending was frustrating. For the country, but also for me. I would like to play in this tournament again, but with a different result."

The striker played in the various youth teams of France, but chose to play for Ivory Coast in 2020, where his mother was born. Haller has only played for the Ivory Coast for a little over a year and a half and he still has to adapt to the circumstances.

"The climate in Africa is really very different. Just breathing was difficult. We didn't have enough time to train extensively. It was even the first time that I played with some of them. I can still be one hundred percent satisfied, but I did my best. We will be better next time."

PSV - Ajax
While Haller was in Africa, Ajax played a huge match against PSV in Eindhoven. The Ajax attacker is a teammate of PSV player Ibrahim Sangaré with the Ivory Coast. They didn't watch the game together. "We were both in our own room. But with every Ajax goal I came to his room to celebrate. When he arrived for the tournament he had a big mouth and said that I had to prepare myself for playing for second place. After PSV – Ajax he was quiet."

Now that the top scorer of the Eredivisie is back in the Netherlands, he is looking forward to the second half of the season. "We are now first and we have to defend that place," Haller said with determination. "We have to dominate in the second half of the season. We are ready for that."

Overmars: 'The transfer market is getting crazier'

The transfer deadline has come and gone. Things remained relatively quiet at Ajax, but Director of Football Affairs Marc Overmars does see a discouraging trend. “The transfer market is getting crazier.  Actually, maybe they should shorten the winter transfer window. Then everyone would have to move on and you can't keep taking players away from each other. That would give some peace of mind.  It was quiet for us. I often say: If you still have to sort things in the last few days, that's not a good sign."
