Shortly after the final whistle in the sc Heerenveen — Ajax match, Steven Berghuis had still not yet seen the footage of the ball which might or might not have crossed the line. "If the referee has no evidence to show that it did, you can't give the goal."

Shortly after saying this, he saw it for himself for the first time. "I expect they can't be 100% certain. That's how football is, unfortunately."

The team captain felt Ajax had not performed well in Friesland. "We didn't play well. We still had our moments on the attack thanks to Kristian Hlynsson and Borna Sosa, among others, in the first half. SC Heerenveen made the most of their opportunities."

Room for improvement
That goal was the 39th in this Eredivisie season. "We're giving away too many goals to win games," concluded a disappointed Berghuis. "We gave away two against Go Ahead Eagles and we gave away two against Heracles. We still won both those matches, but it can't stay like this. We're supposed to be a team, and we certainly have to do better. There's lots of room for improvement. This match again makes that clear."

Van 't Schip: 'We'll be without Bergwijn for at least February'

Ajax will have to get it done without captain Steven Bergwijn for the next few weeks. The forward suffered an upper leg injury during training this week. "How long he'll be out depends a bit on how his recovery goes," says trainer John van 't Schip. "But I think we'll be without him for at least February and also part of March."
