Ajax started strongly in Rotterdam and also created the first chances of the match. Abdellah Ouazane's 0-1 after just over 20 minutes was therefore deserved. The attacker played a one-two with Julian Brandt and finished beautifully into the far corner from the edge of the penalty area.

After the 0-1, Sparta started to come out of their shell. The equaliser before half-time was not undeserved. Jens Toornstra eventually headed in the 1-1. Before the half-time whistle, Tolu restored Ajax's lead. The striker was on the end of an Ajax counter-attack and calmly fired the ball into the far corner.

In the second half, the home side went in search of an equaliser. Ajax initially came close to making it 1-3 through Tolu. His shot from a difficult angle, after some poor defending by Sparta, hit the post.

After that, it was the home side's turn. Mitchell van Bergen, Milan Zonneveld and Lushendry Martes all came close to making it 2-2. But Marc ter Stegen could not be beaten in the second half.
