Director of Football affairs Marc Overmars has informed the player on behalf of the club that he is welcome to train with Ajax from said date. Initially, this will mean his return to keeper training and team sessions with Jong Ajax.
Overmars: "We have decided that Andre will start goalkeeper training and team training sessions with Jong Ajax. The question, for now, is whether he will earn a spot with the first team in the long term. We have now moved on without him and have recruited two keepers during his suspension. Both an experienced and a talented one, the latter being one with an eye on the future. The team has already started the season and is in the process of teambuilding."

The Cameroonian's contract expires at the end of this season, on June 30, 2022. The goalkeeper made the switch from FC Barcelona's youth academy, La Masia, to Ajax in the summer of 2015. On August 20, 2016, Onana made his debut for the first team in the match in Amsterdam between Ajax and Willem II (1-2).
He has played 204 official matches for the first team. The substance Furosemide was found in his urine following an 'out of competition' test on October 30, last year. The UEFA disciplinary body subsequently suspended him for 12 months. The CAS ruled on appeal that the suspension would be shortened to nine months.
