Ajax looked good in the opening stages. That led to 0-1 in the twelfth minute. Hlynsson took a pass from Benjamin Tahirović with a neat left-footed shot that found the mark. In the 24th minute, the 0-2 goal came from Akpom. The Englishman set up the attack, played a one-two with Mika Godts, and then shot the ball off a defender's leg behind Zwolle-keeper Jasper Schendelaar.
After the good first quarter Ajax fell back, but the Amsterdammers were spared a goal against. That came in the 72nd minute, when Filip Krastev was able to steam up relatively unhindered and pulled the trigger.
Ajax had difficulties, but ultimately, six minutes before regulation time, managed to seal the deal. Once again, it was Akpom who found the mark. An excellent long pass from Benjamin Tahirović came to Anton Gaaei. The forward crossed the ball, and Akpom scored easily: 1-3.
