Ajax started strongly on home soil and earned a penalty after just two minutes following a foul on Godts. The Belgian stepped up himself and converted from the spot. Ajax remained firmly in control and doubled the lead through Wijndal, who finished off a delightful pass from Steven Berghuis. It was remarkable that the score remained 2-0 at half-time considering the number of chances Ajax created.

Another excellent pass
Shortly after the restart, Dolberg tapped home at the near post, once again following an excellent pass from Berghuis, to make it 3-0. Godts later had the opportunity to add a fourth from the penalty spot, but the Belgian was unable to convert his second spot kick of the evening. In the closing stages, Shelbourne FC scored from their first clear-cut opportunity of the match to make it 3-1.

Another memorable moment came with the introduction of Julian Brandt. The German signed his contract in Amsterdam on Friday and received a rousing reception from the Johan Cruijff ArenA crowd as he made his first appearance for Ajax.
