Ajax score five times and win in Groningen

Ajax started confidently and created several opportunities in the opening stages. Davy Klaassen had the chance to open the scoring from the penalty spot after Marcos Leonardo was brought down in the box, but Etienne Vaessen kept out his effort.

Ajax eventually took the lead midway through the first half. Following a ball recovery by Owen Wijndal, Brandt drove towards goal and finished calmly to make it 0-1. Shortly before the break, Bouwman doubled the advantage after reacting quickest to a loose ball in the penalty area, sending Ajax into half-time with a comfortable two-goal lead.

FC Groningen pulled one back early in the second half through Brynjólfur Willumsson, but Ajax remained in control. A Klaassen goal was ruled out after a VAR review for offside in the build-up, before Brandt restored Ajax's two-goal lead with his second strike of the afternoon: 1-3.

The visitors added more goals to the scoreline in the closing stages. Mokio first converted from close range after Klaassen's header was cleared off the line and later grabbed his second goal of the match to make it 1-5. In between, goalkeeper Marc ter Stegen denied Thom van Bergen from the penalty spot.

FC Groningen found the net once more before full-time to make it 2-5, but couldn't turn around Ajax's lead. The away fans in the Euroborg saw Ajax scoring five times and returning home with all three points.
