Owen Wijndal played a major part in Julian Brandt’s goal to make it 1-3 against FC Groningen with a run that he started inside his own half. The Ajax left-back carried the ball all the way to the penalty area, saw that his German teammate was in an even better position to shoot and played the ball across. Brandt turned Wijndal’s pass into the crucial 1-3. In this edition of Ajax Insights, we take a closer look at Wijndal’s statistics. Ajax Insights is developed by Team Rockstars IT.

With his assist for the 1-3, Wijndal added extra shine to his strong performance in Groningen. He had already played an important role in the 0-1 as well. Thanks to the left-back pressing Jorg Schreuders well, Ajax won the ball back inside FC Groningen’s half. That ball recovery allowed Brandt to get going. The German decided to go for goal himself and fired into the near corner to make it 0-1. So Wijndal also deserved credit for the goal.

The left-back still looked somewhat vulnerable at the start of the match, but recovered very quickly and ultimately produced an excellent performance. In Groningen, he not only made an important contribution in attack, but also kept fellow wide player Jorg Schreuders quiet.

Over the course of the match, Wijndal carried the ball a total of 83 metres towards the opposition goal. Only Bouwman and Gloukh covered more ground with the ball at their feet towards FC Groningen’s goal.

From the left flank, he twice put Brandt in a position to score. The Ajax player was warmly embraced by his teammates, who clearly appreciated Wijndal’s contribution. The strong performance of Ajax’s number 5 is also reflected in his passing accuracy. Wijndal made 33 passes in total, 31 of which reached a teammate. That represents a passing accuracy of almost 94 per cent.

As well as playing a significant attacking role in the 2-5 victory over FC Groningen, Wijndal also impressed defensively. The left-back won four of his five individual duels. In doing so, he contributed to only the second time in the club’s history that Ajax have scored five goals away to FC Groningen. In 1984, Ajax won 1-5 at what was then the Oosterpark.
