Ajax end pre-season on a positive note

Ajax won their final pre-season fixture on Sunday afternoon. Míchel Sánchez's side defeated FC Volendam 1-3 away from home. Anton Gaaei opened the scoring before Marcos Leonardo converted from the penalty spot. After Ajax had gifted the hosts a goal, Tolu sealed the result with Ajax's third of the afternoon.

The first chance of the match fell to the home side. Henk Veerman struck the crossbar from a difficult angle before Ajax took control. Anton Gaaei then hit the post, but just a minute after the hydration break the Danish defender found the net with a powerful effort to make it 0-1.

Ajax were awarded a penalty before half-time following a foul on Oliver Edvardsen. New signing Marcos Leonardo stepped up and calmly converted to double the lead. In between the two Ajax goals, Maher Carrizo had also struck the crossbar.

Ajax were again the better side after the break, but FC Volendam were handed a goal. Goalkeeper Joeri Heerkens made an error after receiving a back-pass from Youri Baas, allowing the hosts to pull one back. Ajax still finished the friendly on a positive note, however, as Tolu marked his unofficial debut for the club with a goal to make it 3-1.

Ajax return to action on Thursday when they face Shelbourne FC at the Johan Cruyff ArenA in the third qualifying round of the UEFA Conference League.
