Ajax took control in the first half in Amsterdam. In the 24th minute, John van 't Schip's team took the lead thanks to a wonderful goal from Gaaei. The right-winger pinged a Mika Godts cross out of the air into the net: 1-0. After the goal, Ajax failed to build their lead any further. In injury time, Go Ahead Eagles retaliated through Bas Kuipers, ending the game at the Johan Cruyff ArenA with 1-1.
