The season is now over following the match in Arnhem. Ajax ends the 2023/2024 season in fifth place. The closing match of the season was fairly straightforward, but neither side had cause to shout.

Vitesse opened the scoring from a counter-attack. Amine Boutrah scored the opening goal just fifteen minutes in. Ajax then started pursuing the equaliser and their hard work paid off just before half time. Converting a fine cross from Anton Gaaei, Šutalo made it 1-1 off the far post.

The best opportunities all went the home team's way after half time. Fifteen minutes before the final whistle saw it go to 2-1, and thoroughly deserved it was, too. A counter-attack from Vitesse looked like it was going to fail, but the Arnhem team managed to hang on to the ball following a mediocre cross. Eventually, Poland's Kacper Kozłowski was able to make it 2-1 without much difficulty.

In the very final closing moments, Ajax pushed to secure a draw and success came courtesy of Steven Berghuis.

Vitesse - Ajax 2-2 (1-1)
15. Boutrah 1-0
43. Šutalo 1-1
78. Kozłowski 2-1
90+3. Berghuis 2-2

Ajax: Rulli, Gaaei, Šutalo, Kaplan, Rensch, Mannsverk (63. Berghuis), Henderson (79. Tahirović), Taylor, Akpom, Brobbey, Bergwijn

On the road with the Setford brothers: 'He was the bossy one'

Visiting Donny: 'Ajax has always been a special place for me'

Donny van de Beek recently returned to the Netherlands for a short period of time. The perfect moment to visit the ex-Ajax player. The midfielder had wonderful years in Amsterdam. Unfortunately, this is in stark contrast to the current fifth place in the Dutch championship. "Ajax will always recover. Sooner or later they will be there again. I am convinced of that."
