Ajax struggled to make an impact in the first half. After fifteen minutes of play, the amateurs took the lead 1-0 through Tim Pieters after a counterattack. After that, the Amsterdam team failed to make a comeback.

Things took a turn for the worse in the second half. Pieters doubled the lead after a little over an hour of playing. Ajax seemed to head towards overtime with goals from Brian Brobbey and Chuba Akpom. In the extra time, Mats Grotenbreg scored 3-2 for the Utrecht-based team.
