The match at the Kras Stadium in Volgendam began at a high tempo, with FC Utrecht creating the first major opportunities of the evening. Ajax initially struggled to find rhythm in possession, but gradually grew into the contest and managed to keep the visitors away from an early opener. As the first half progressed, Ajax became increasingly dangerous going forward. The Amsterdam side created several promising opportunities before the break, but neither team was able to find the decisive touch in front of goal. As a result, both sides headed into the dressing room with the score still level at 0-0.
Ajax resumed the match with attacking intent after half-time and continued to search for an opening goal. One of the biggest chances of the second half fell to Jorthy Mokio, whose effort came close before the youngster was later forced off through injury. The match remained evenly balanced throughout the second half, with opportunities at both ends but no breakthrough after ninety minutes.
Extra time eventually brought the opening goal. In the 96th minute, Davy Klaassen once again proved decisive for Ajax. The midfielder found the net to put the hosts ahead and lived up to his ‘Mister 1-0’ nickname once more. Ajax looked on course to secure victory, but shortly after the interval in extra time, FC Utrecht equalised through Gjivai Zechiël to make it 1-1 again. With no winner after 120 minutes, penalties were needed to decide the tie. Ajax kept their composure from the spot and ultimately won the shootout 4-3, sparking celebrations in Volendam.
The result means Ajax have secured European football for next season and will enter the second qualifying round of the Conference League.
