The match at the Abe Lenstra Stadion started with Ajax struggling to gain control. The Amsterdam side created a few small chances in the opening half, but only Anton Gaaei came close to breaking the deadlock when his effort rattled the crossbar. Sean Steur also had a couple of opportunities, yet both teams headed into the dressing room with the score still at 0-0.
Ajax kept searching for openings after the break, but clear-cut chances remained scarce, especially once heavy rain started pouring down in Heerenveen. The waterlogged pitch made it increasingly difficult to move the ball quickly, and despite their efforts, the visitors were unable to find the net.
Ajax end in fifth place of the VriendenLoterij Eredivisie and are now heading to Volendam to play the playoffs for a place in the Conference League. The first match will take place on Thursday, May 21. If Ajax win, they will play the final on Sunday, May 24.
