Wout Weghorst will be sidelined until the winter break with an ankle injury. Medical tests carried out on Monday showed that the striker suffered significant damage to the ligaments in his right ankle during the away match against Fortuna Sittard.
Weghorst was forced off injured on Saturday in the 3–1 away win over Fortuna Sittard and did not travel with the squad to Azerbaijan for the match against Qarabağ FK.
Ajax have arrived in Azerbaijan. The Ajacieden trained on Monday morning at sports complex de Toekomst and flew to Baku in the afternoon. Wednesday evening sees the sixth UEFA Champions League match on the schedule: Qarabağ FK – Ajax.
Ajax will have to face Qarabağ FK on Wednesday in their UEFA Champions League match without Kenneth Taylor, Wout Weghorst, and Josip Šutalo. The trio is not fit enough to travel to Azerbaijan. James McConnell, Gerald Alders, and Steven Berghuis will also stay in the Netherlands.
Ajax have recorded their second league victory in a row in the VriendenLoterij Eredivisie. After the win against FC Groningen at the Johan Cruijff ArenA, Ajax secured another victory on Saturday evening away to Fortuna Sittard. Fred Grim’s side fell behind early on, but after two own goals and a stunning strike from Owen Wijndal, the final score was 1–3.
