Thirty-year-old Veltman had a weekend off and used it to come back to Amsterdam. "It's always nice to be here. I left during a difficult period with corona. That was a crazy time without many games. But it feels like I played a game here yesterday."
Friends
Veltman is still in touch with a few of the guys from the current squad. "It will always remain that way. They are ex-teammates but have become friends over the years, I always keep in touch with them."
In total, the defender played 246 matches for the Ajax first team. On the pitch, Veltman was welcomed by Edwin van der Sar. "That was very nice. I know Edwin personally, but it's still nice to hear such words from him."
Veltman received loud applause, lovely words and a present at the Johan Cruijff ArenA. "It's really over now. Of course, you never know how it will turn out, but I'm now completely in my place in England. It's still great to be here." Despite the distance, Veltman still watches almost every Ajax match. "It has to fit with my schedule, but I'm still following them closely."
Fantastic Klassieker
Ajax – Feyenoord turned out to be a great match to watch. "It was crazy. The match went up and down, but at halftime I had the feeling that Ajax was still going to win. It's pretty crazy to see the Klassieker from the sidelines. I've played a lot, but at home it can always be crazy. You saw that today when Ajax took the lead," Veltman said with a smile on his face.
