''We couldn't get a grip on the game in the first half. It was slow, there was no pace,'' said manager John van 't Schip, analysing the first 45 minutes against Almere City. ''We tried to put more oomph into the match with the substitutions.'' The match against the eleventh-place Eredivisie team ended 2-2.

Neither was the manager entirelyvsatisfied with the second half. ''Things didn't improve much after the break. But Chuba Akpom and Benjamin Tahirović got us to 2-1, and we set up more chances. Too bad we still gave it away. These are things we can and must prevent.''

Either way, the Ajax defence were not looking good when Almere City made it 1-0. What was left of the defence was in no good shape following that corner, letting the home side attack. ''All our hopes were dashed. We also conceded a goal like this against Feyenoord and that really should not happen,'' Van 't Schip made clear.

Tahirović was responsible for the penalty late in the match. Van 't Schip was asked about how the Ajax player seemed in the dressing room. ''He was really gutted. Unfortunately, instead of scoring the winning goal, he was just the bad boy. That's quite a problem for him.''
