The first phase of the match in Amsterdam was calm. Chuba Akpom came close to opening the score within the first fifteen minutes, but his attempt hit the crossbar via the hands of the goalkeeper. The Norwegians took the lead a little over the fifteen-minute mark, and Albert Grøbæk hit the net: 0-1.
After half-time, a mistake in Ajax’s defence was punished mercilessly right after Akpom had an enormous chance at scoring the equaliser. Grønbæk shot the ball behind Diant Ramaj for the second time that evening. Ajax managed to equalise in the final phase of the match. Branco van den Boomen hit the goal from the penalty spot, and in the last minute, it was Berghuis causing an explosion of joy in the Johan Cruijff ArenA by chipping the ball into the goal: 2-2.
