Maarten Paes put in a decent performance on his official debut for Ajax, although he struggled to come to terms with the draw against NEC. "When you are Ajax, you must always beat NEC at home," he told ESPN.

He himself reflected on a reasonable match. The goalkeeper was important for Ajax with several fine saves. "Yes, personally, it went quite well for me. I did have a few minor errors on the ball. But with the experience and the travelling I’ve been through, I tried to stay as calm as possible. And that while I was very much thrown in at the deep end."

Paes was between the posts following the injury to Vítězslav Jaroš. "The coach and I had a fairly short conversation yesterday. Since I arrived here, we’ve had good contact. Fred Grim has always been open with me. Yesterday he simply asked: 'Are you ready?'"

"Because of my lack of match rhythm, I did miss a bit of sharpness," the Ajax goalkeeper continued. "But you live, and you learn. We’ll review several things in the coming days."

In the end, the match finished 1-1 at the Johan Cruijff ArenA. The goal conceded came from a set-piece situation, and it was not the first time this season. "They score two goals from scrappy moments from a corner or free-kick. One of them is disallowed. We simply have to be more assertive in those situations."

Anton Gaaei in Club of 100: 'Surreal to be among these great Danish names'

"It's special to be on this wall," Anton Gaaei says as he looks at his spot in Ajax's Club of 100 in the catacombs of the Johan Cruijff ArenA. Against Excelsior, he reached the milestone of one hundred appearances in the white-red-white. That is why his photo now hangs among fellow Danes such as Kasper Dolberg, Christian Eriksen, Lasse Schöne and Søren Lerby. "There are definitely some big names in there."
