Matheus joined Ajax on loan from Braga at the end of January and is already feeling at home. "I’m very happy to be in this country and at such a big club. Not just me, but also my wife and children."
His family is eager to explore their new surroundings. "Yes, we’re trying to learn about the country and the city’s culture while discovering nice places," the goalkeeper shared.
English lessons
Matheus is also taking English lessons three times a week and is making steady progress. "I understand it, but I can’t speak it yet. Conjugating verbs is still a bit tricky. I hope to master it soon so I can communicate with my teammates in the dressing room. That would be great."
The Amsterdam crowd got their first glimpse of Matheus on Sunday, and he knew the importance of making a strong first impression. "It was special. I can only thank God, but I also want to thank my teammates. Like Remko and Jay, who help me every day, and the other players and staff. It was important to feel their warmth and support today. I think it gave me more confidence and certainty."
‘Gratitude’
With his wife and children supporting him from the stands, the debut was even more meaningful. "They are always by my side and know what we’ve been through to get here. That’s why I felt so much gratitude."
