Effective immediately, Jan van Halst becomes chief executive at AFC Ajax NV and as such also chair of the board. This constitutes a temporary, nominal appointment effective 4 September, 2023, until such time as Alex Kroes can be appointed chief executive and chair of the board.

Ajax announced on 2 August that they intended to appoint Kroes, and also disclosed the non-compete clause he has with AZ, where he was technically employed until 1 September, 2023. It is currently still unclear when that appointment can take effect.

As a result of joining the management team, Van Halst (20 April, 1969) has resigned as non-executive director of Ajax with immediate effect. The former professional footballer has been a member of the Supervisory Board (SB) since 26 May, 2023. Ideally, the Supervisory Board would like to see Van Halst return as a non-executive director, of course respecting the appropriate procedure.
