The North-Holland derby is the match where Van ’t Schip will return to Ajax's staff. In May 2009, the Ajacied coached the team once as interim coach after Marco van Basten gave up his role. Van ’t Schip helped the Ajax players to a 1-0 victory over FC Twente on the final day of the 2008/2009 season. Urby Emanuelson was the matchwinner in the ArenA that day.
Over fourteen years later, the former right-winger has been appointed as interim coach of Ajax 1 for a more extended period. Van ’t Schip's job is to get Ajax higher on the Eredivisie ranking. Motivation wasn’t the issue for the Ajax players during their last training session. Despite the sad weather conditions, they worked hard at sports complex De Toekomst—everything to start the match against the team from Volendam in the best way possible.
The matches are following each other rapidly this season. On Sunday, sc Heerenveen will visit the Johan Cruijff ArenA. Next Thursday, the return match against Brighton & Hove Albion in the group stage of the Europa League will take place. Those matches are a chance for the new interim coach and his Ajacieden to make a positive difference.
