John Heitinga is the new head coach of Ajax. After years in the youth academy, hundreds of matches for Ajax’s first team, various coaching roles at the De Toekomst training complex, and a stint as assistant coach with Jong Ajax, he now embarks on his second spell as the club’s head coach.

John Heitinga was born on 15 November 1983 in Alphen aan den Rijn. It was in his hometown where he first started playing football, before joining the Ajax Academy in the early 1990s. That decision proved pivotal, as Ajax gained a true homegrown talent.

Heitinga quickly rose through the ranks of the famed academy and, during the 1998/1999 season, played in the B1 team under coach John van 't Schip alongside teammates like Maarten Stekelenburg and Rafael van der Vaart. That season, the Ajacieden were crowned champions.

Debut
Heitinga's first-team debut was one to remember. On 26 August 2001, at just seventeen years old, he made his senior Ajax debut away to Feyenoord in De Kuip. Ajax were down to ten men after a red card for Hatem Trabelsi, and head coach Co Adriaanse brought Heitinga on for Shota Arveladze to strengthen the defence while leading 0–1. Ajax went on to win the match 1–2

"He was a very serious, disciplined boy. It was hard to shake him. That's why he could handle making his debut away to Feyenoord,” said former teammate Richard Knopper in 2023 to NOS about 'Johnny's' first senior appearance.

Successes
In his debut season, Heitinga made 19 appearances, playing 1,275 minutes. The reward? A league title and a Dutch Cup. But it wasn't all smooth sailing—injuries and limited playing time brought tough periods. Still, Heitinga always backed himself. "I'll give everything I've got to earn a place in the team," he said in 2003, after battling injuries for a year and a half.

During his time at Ajax, Heitinga developed into a strong, reliable defender. Across two spells at the club, he played 218 official matches, scored 25 goals, and regularly wore the captain's armband. His leadership and fighting spirit made him a fan favourite.

Departure
After winning two Eredivisie titles, three Dutch Cups, and four Johan Cruijff Shields, Heitinga left Ajax in the summer of 2008 to join Atlético Madrid. That same year, he received the Gouden Schoen (Golden Boot) award—presented by Jaap Stam—as the Eredivisie's best player.

Spells in Spain, England, and Italy followed, before Heitinga returned to Ajax in 2015. However, his second stint at the club didn't go as hoped, and in early 2016, at the age of 32, he decided to retire from professional football.

Coaching career
Not long after hanging up his boots, John Heitinga returned to Ajax—this time as a coach within the club's renowned youth academy. In the 2016/2017 season, he served as assistant coach to Marcel Keizer at Jong Ajax. Interestingly, Keizer is now his assistant in the current Ajax setup. That season, the duo guided the reserves to an impressive second-place finish, just behind champions VVV-Venlo.

Heitinga then took a step back in age group and became the head coach of Ajax’s highest youth team for several years. With talented players like Brian Brobbey, Naci Ünüvar, Kenneth Taylor, Jurriën Timber, and Youri Regeer under his guidance, he led Ajax U19 to the national championship in 2019. In 2021, Heitinga returned to Jong Ajax—this time as head coach.

Just a year and a half later, Heitinga found himself in the same role—this time as interim head coach of Ajax's first team. The true Ajacied took over from Alfred Schreuder and stood on the sidelines for the first time as head coach on 29 January 2023, in an away match against Excelsior. Ajax won 1–4, and shortly after, the club confirmed that Heitinga would see out the remainder of the season as head coach. Under his leadership, Ajax finished third in the Eredivisie. At the end of the campaign, Heitinga left for England, where he spent two seasons as an assistant coach—first under David Moyes at West Ham United, and most recently at English champions Liverpool under Arne Slot.

Back home
Now, he's back. Back at the club where he started kicking a ball as a young boy. Back at the club where he fought through adversity. Back at the club he captained with pride. Back at the club where his name once echoed through the stadium.
Welcome home, Johnny.
