According to Grim, the squad travelled to Azerbaijan with plenty of motivation. "We approach it match by match. In the Champions League we really want to get rid of that ugly zero. We’ll be playing for the win tomorrow," said the Ajax manager.
Vitezslav Jaros still shone against FC Groningen, but found it tougher in the 1–3 win in Sittard. “The pitch was poor and that made it difficult,” he said. “I’d rather my saves don’t look good but I do keep the balls out, than that they look brilliant and I don’t stop them.”
Jaros says he feels good in Amsterdam: "I’m really enjoying myself here on a personal level as well." The Liverpool loanee is therefore looking positively towards the match against Qarabağ FK. "We’ve found the way up again. I feel we’re in a better place now."
Opponent on Wednesday evening
Grim and his staff have studied and analysed Wednesday’s opponent extensively. "We’ve seen a mature team that is well balanced. Qarabağ FK give little away at the back and can break incredibly quickly. We’ve come up with a plan. Tomorrow is a match in itself," said the Ajax manager. When asked whether he is afraid of the side from Azerbaijan, the answer was clear: "We are definitely not afraid."
During the press moment, Grim also addressed the injury situation within the squad. "Wout Weghorst’s injury is serious. Because of that, Dolberg played more minutes on Saturday than would normally be desirable. But yes, needs must," Grim explained.
According to the Ajax manager, the busy schedule is not a problem for Ajax, but he does take the players’ physical condition into account. "With Kenneth Taylor and Josip Šutalo, we assess things week by week. They have stayed behind in Amsterdam. We’ll see whether they can be involved on Sunday against Feyenoord."
