After the Ajax - Sparta match midfielder Edson Álvarez was treated to a surprise by his own family. The Mexican player was led to the main pitch to announce the gender of his unborn child. At the edge of the pitch he kicked a football which disintegrated to produce a pink or blue cloud, which blew through the Johan Cruijff ArenA.

On Saturday evening Ajax achieved a closely contested win at home against Sparta Rotterdam. The Ajax team were behind after half an hour of play, but showed their resilience early on in the second half. Thanks to goals from Davy Klaassen and Dusan Tadic the Amsterdam team repaired the damage to end up 2-1.

Ajax and Edson Álvarez have agreed on an extension for his current contract, which ran until June 30, 2024. The defensive midfielder's new contract has been extended by one year, until June 30, 2025.
