After a delayed kick-off due to smoke from fireworks, Ajax made the stronger start. AZ struggled to get into the game, allowing Ajax to create several good chances. However, the finishing touch was lacking, and neither side managed to score before half-time.
Ajax returned for the second half sloppily and quickly conceded, with Wouter Goes opening the scoring for the hosts. Grim’s team increased the pressure in search of an equaliser, which eventually came in the closing minutes. Substitute Kian Fitz-Jim, who came on in the 66th minute, headed home his first goal of the season.
Another positive moment for Ajax was the debut of Oleksandr Zinchenko. The Ukrainian, who joined the club during the winter transfer window, made his first minutes for Ajax in Alkmaar.
Ajax’s next VriendenLoterij Eredivisie match is on Saturday, February 14. They will face Fortuna Sittard at the Johan Cruijff ArenA, with kick-off at 20:00.
