Fairly quietly, Daliyah de Klonia has made her way into Hesterine de Reus's squad. While the spotlight this season might be on the Tiny Hoekstras, Lotte Keukelaars, or Danique Tolhoeks of the world, De Klonia has grown into a crucial player for the Ajax Women's team. Ahead of Ajax - PSV in the Johan Cruijff ArenA, we speak with the nineteen-year-old defender.

After Thursday morning's training session in a drizzly Amsterdam, the defender takes her time to look ahead to Ajax - PSV and reflect on what has been her breakthrough year.

Do you see it that way yourself? Is this the year of your breakthrough?
With a smile the defender shares how this season so far has felt for her. "Last year I didn’t play much, but I've played everything so far. I'm in the starting lineup, almost every week. That gives confidence."

Do you think defenders get enough recognition?
"It's logical that forwards like Danique Tolhoek and Lotte Keukelaar stand out more. They score goals or provide assists. As a defender you prevent goals, and that's less noticeable. Still I believe defenders are important, especially now that backs are taking on a bigger role in the attack."

Does that reflect who you are as a person? That you might not want to be in the spotlight?
"Outside the field I'm calm and very reserved. I get along well with everyone, but I don’t seek attention quickly. Though on the field I can flip a switch when that’s needed. Then in my defense I can be quite tough."

What’s it like to wear the Ajax jersey as an Amsterdammer?
"It's like a dream coming true. I'm a real family person, and my entire family is incredibly proud of me. My friends are too. They're all coming this Sunday to the ArenA to watch the match. That makes it even more special."

How do you think Ajax lives in Amsterdam?
"In Amsterdam you can find Ajax everywhere. On every corner you can buy an Ajax jersey and everywhere you can see the city's three crosses. Ajax is simply a part of Amsterdam."

What does playing in the Johan Cruijff ArenA mean to you?
"It's obviously amazing to play in the Johan Cruijff ArenA, that has always been a dream of mine since I was a little girl. It's still very special, because we usually play at Sports centre de Toekomst. The ArenA simply feels different, and I hope a lot of fans come to create an atmosphere. That makes it extra special."

What do you think the odds are against PSV?
"PSV is of course a good team with strong players. But if we show the same high intensity as we did against FC Twente, then we'll have a big chance of securing the win in Amsterdam."

What can fans expect of the match against PSV?
"Make sure to come to the ArenA on December 7. It promises to be an exciting match, and your support can make the difference in keeping the three points in Amsterdam. It's going to be a special evening."
