The 25-year-old from Amsterdam succeeds Dusan Tadic, who recently left the club. Bergwijn came back to Ajax in July, 2022. Born in Amsterdam, he joined the club at the age of 7 and spent six years with the youth academy. Eleven years on, and he's coming back.
He made a total of 43 appearances in his debut season as an adult Ajax player. In thirty Eredivisie matches, the winger scored on twelve occasions, in four cup games he managed to find the net once, scoring twice in eight European clashes as well as in the Johan Cruijff Shield at the start of the season.
His first Eredivisie match in the Johan Cruijff ArenA will certainly stay with him for some time. He scored a hat-trick against FC Groningen (6-1) on 14 August.
The first time Bergwijn gets to wear the captain's armband officially will be this Saturday, when Ajax plays the first Eredivisie match of 2023/2024 against Heracles.
