Together with his wife Truus, Van Gaal arrives at the main entrance of the Johan Cruijff ArenA. Everyone immediately notices that he is there. Wherever Van Gaal goes, there is life; wherever Van Gaal goes, something happens. This day is no exception. With a firm handshake, he introduces himself, not because he has to, but because it is the proper thing to do. He is dressed in a brand-new blazer adorned with an Ajax honorary member pin. It is symbolic of the day ahead. Van Gaal is prepared and eager to talk about 'his' Ajax.
Tone for the day
Before we have even entered the stadium, a PostNL delivery driver, who has just dropped off a package at the main entrance, approaches us. "I know you, and you’re looking good!" Truus laughs and replies, "Indeed, I recognize you too." Van Gaal turns around and says calmly, "You’re looking very handsome yourself." The tone for the day is set.
Not long afterward, Ricardo van Rhijn walks by. The two spot each other and share a warm embrace. Truus receives a hug as well. Van Gaal has been at the Johan Cruijff ArenA for exactly two minutes, and his status already speaks volumes.
As we make our way towards the stairwell, we encounter a group of tourists making their way to the Ajax Museum. A few people recognize Van Gaal, though they hesitate to approach him. Once a parent gathers the courage to ask whether their child can have a photo with him, the rest follow.
The mostly foreign tourists patiently wait their turn to be photographed with the great master. The children are visibly impressed, and one father becomes slightly flustered as his two kids pose between Van Gaal and the camera. He struggles to switch his phone to camera mode, prompting the familiar Van Gaal response: direct and witty. "I think Dad’s a little nervous."
