Ajax Women win Dutch Cup in Nijmegen

On Monday the Ajax Women won the first price of the season at the expense of PSV. In Nijmegen the Ajax Women beat the team from Eindhoven with 1-2. The Dutch Cup was won for the fifth time, thanks to goals of Nadine Noordam and Romée Leuchter.

The first chance in the cup final for the Ajax women was after nine minutes. Noordam got a second ball at her feet and took a shot at the PSV goal but it was blocked by a PSV player.

Fifteen minutes later Danny Schenkel’s team again got an opportunity to take the lead. The international player Leuchter was twice the final destination of a good strike but both shots were saved by the goalkeeper.

Lead by Noordam
In the 38th minute Ajax took the lead. Victoria Pelova passed the ball to Leuchter, who passed it through to Noordam. The 23-year-old midfielder scored with a well placed shot: 0-1.

After that first goal Ajax became stronger but could not convert that into another goal. At halftime the score was still 0-1.

The team from Eindhoven started strong at the beginning of the second half but Ajax was able to withstand the pressure. As the second half progressed the spaces on the pitch became bigger. In the 66th minute Ajax could almost take advantage of these spaces. After a through pass from Pelova, Chasity Grant could move up the PSV goal. The striker took a good shot just outside the box but the ball hit the bar.

Ajax shows resilience
Ten minutes after this big chance PSV scored the tying goal. Jonna van de Velde lost possession of the ball to Rodriquez. After a good cross Thestrup could easily tap the ball in.

The team of coach Schenkel was not going to give up and showed resilience. Shortly after the equalizer the team from Amsterdam took the lead again after a good header by Leuchter. Pelovas assist, an inswinger, was just as pretty and deserved the same credits as the goal.

After the 1-2 for Ajax, the pace of the match got higher and higher. There were more chances on both sides but the Amsterdam squad was able maintain the lead.

Thanks to this victory the Ajax women won the Dutch Cup for the fifth time in history. With five matches remaining in the competition and only three point behind FC Twente, Ajax is still have a good chance to take the double this season.

Highlights PSV - Ajax

Ajax were unable to secure their 21st Dutch Cup win in the history of the club. Erik ten Hag's team went down 2-1 in De Kuip in Rotterdam against PSV. Ajax managed to take the lead in the first half with a beautiful goal from Ryan Gravenberch. Straight after half time Ajax went down by two goals.
