Ajax initially had difficulty getting into their rhythm in the first half. SC Heerenveen closed ranks and ensured an evenly matched game.
The impasse was broken just before half-time by Hlynsson. The Icelandic player scored with an assist from Mika Godts, who overall had a good game. It could have been 2-0 shortly after, but Branco van den Boomen hit the post hard.
Opportunites were scarce in the second half. Ajax held on to their lead but failed to play out the counter-attack well on several occasions.
Ultimately there was ten minutes of extra time, but Ajax managed to survive. This marked the fourth win in a row and the third time chalking up a clean sheet. It was also a great introduction for Dies Janse, who was making his official debut and played the entire match at left back.
