Ajax struggled to dominate the game in the first half. The Amsterdam-based team faced immediate pressure from their opponent in the first fifteen minutes. Leondro Andrade scored an early goal on behalf of his side, but the goal was ruled offside. Ajax found more spaces as the first half proceeded but failed to create big chances. The team from Azerbaijan played with ten men from the fifteenth minute onwards when Júlio Romão received a red card after a foul on Mika Godts. Kenneth Taylor opened the score on behalf of Ajax, with Wout Weghorst responsible for the assist. Ajax went into the dressing room leading 0-1.

The second half started with a big chance for Wout Weghorst. He saw his attempt blocked. The ball bounced back to Christian Rasmussen, but his attempt ended up in the hands of the goalkeeper. Both teams created multiple chances in the following minutes but failed to find the net. A penalty was awarded to Ajax after Qarabağ FK’s Kevin Medina worked Christian Rasmussen to the floor.
