Ajax travelled to Sittard after winning the remainder of the match against FC Groningen on Tuesday. Early in the match, Ajax conceded a goal scored by Kaj Sierhuis. The former Ajacied opened the score on behalf of the team from Sittard: 1-0.
The Amsterdam-based team struggled to get a grip of the match and saw Wout Weghorst leave the pitch with a foot injury. In the extra time of the first half, Ajax luckily equalised with the help of the opponent. Syb van Ottele netted the ball into his own net, 1-1.
Shortly after half-time, and with both teams returned to the pitch, Fortuna once again scored an own goal. Ryan Fosso scored via his shoulder, 1-2. Ajax came back from the dressing room with some fresh energy, and the third goal for the Ajacieden came soon. This time scored by one of Ajax's own players. Owen Wijndal scored his first goal with a distance shot, making the final score 1-3. Ajax ended the match with ten men, after Youri Baas received two yellow cards.
Ajax take the three points back to Amsterdam, where two important games await next week. On Wednesday, Ajax will face Qarabağ FK away in the Champions League. That match will start at 18:45. Later that week, Ajax will face Feyenoord in De Klassieker. That match will take place in the Johan Cruijff ArenA on Sunday afternoon at 15:30.
