The afternoon got off to a good start for Ajax. Just eight minutes into the game, Kenneth Taylor made a break for it in Fortuna Sittard's half, ending his solo streak in the Limburg team's penalty area. The Ajax player went for it and fired the ball past goalkeeper Michael Verrips.
Things went downhill
Without making a fuss, Ajax were in control of the game in the first half. The visitors got into the game a lot better in the second half. Fortuna Sittard also caused Ajax some pain immediately after half time. Deroy Duarte saw his chance in the near corner by Diant Ramaj and shot hard.
Things just went downhill from there. Ajax lacked confidence in the play which followed, seeing Fortuna Sittard strike it lucky and go 2-1 up. A cross deflected off Ahmetcan Kaplan, leaving former Ajax player Kaj Sierhuis unmarked in front of Ramaj. The striker then simply tapped the ball in.
Ajax had already made substitutions by then, bringing Brian Brobbey and several others on. He hadn't been totally fit and so started out on the bench. He did get the chance to score an equaliser ten minutes before the end.
Branco van den Boomen swerved the ball across, after which the striker found himself alone with goalkeeper Verrips. The Ajax player just kissed the ball, giving the Fortuna Sittard keeper an easy save.
Late equaliser
Verrips had no chance minutes before the end though, as Brobbey made it 2-2 from close range. The ball passed to him from Josip Sutalo after a corner. And with his sixteenth league competition goal, the striker at least earned Ajax another point.
