The visitors from Eindhoven started the match strongly and took the lead after five minutes. Following a cross from the right, Ruben van Bommel headed the ball towards Ricardo Pepi, who nodded home from close range to make it 0-1.

Ajax responded well and drew level through Tolu in the 23rd minute. Míchel Sánchez's side then took control and created several good opportunities to go ahead. First, Julian Brandt and Steven Berghuis were unable to find the net, before Davy Klaassen fired over from a promising position. Just before half-time, however, PSV struck at the other end. Lutsharel Geertruida scored from a corner to restore the visitors' lead.

After the break, both teams looked to create chances, although there was less excitement than before the interval. Substitute Abdellah Ouazane was presented with a great opportunity but shot over the bar. PSV eventually sealed the victory in the closing stages, making the final score 1-3.
