Ajax has reached an agreement with Sofyan Amrabat. The defensive midfielder has signed a contract in Amsterdam that takes immediate effect and runs until June 30, 2028. The Morocco international joins Ajax as a free agent after reaching an agreement earlier this Saturday with his former club Fenerbahçe to terminate his existing contract.
Amrabat (Huizen, August 21, 1996) began his professional career at FC Utrecht and later also played for Feyenoord before moving abroad. He subsequently represented Club Brugge (Belgium), Hellas Verona (Italy), Fiorentina (Italy), Manchester United (England) and Fenerbahçe (Turkey). Last season, the 30-year-old featured for Real Betis in Spain. The experienced international recently appeared at his third World Cup with the Moroccan national team.
Jordi Cruyff: "We are delighted to have secured Sofyan’s signature. He is physically strong, technically gifted and brings a wealth of international experience. He also knows the Dutch league very well, which means we expect him to settle in quickly. In Sofyan, we have signed exactly the type of player we were looking for."
Sofyan Amrabat has been in contact with Jordi Cruijff since April. The newly signed Ajax player reveals that his relationship with the club’s technical director clicked immediately. "He told me about Ajax’s plans. It was a great story. We stayed in touch throughout the entire period."
The fixtures for the UEFA Conference League League Phase have been confirmed. Ajax will begin their campaign away to Hajduk Split on Thursday, October 15. Kick-off in Croatia is at 18:45 CET. Ajax's first home fixture follows a week later, when Atalanta visit the Johan Cruyff ArenA on Thursday, October 22. That match will kick off at 21:00 CET. Information regarding ticket sales will be announced through Ajax's official channels no later than September 4.
Ajax now know which six clubs they will face in the League Phase. The Amsterdam side have been drawn against Atalanta, Getafe, FC Thun, FC Midtjylland, Hajduk Split and STVV. Head coach Míchel Sánchez followed the draw together with his coaching staff and players.
