On the challenging pitch of the King Baudouin Stadium, Ajax came close to taking the lead in the eighth minute when Oliver Edvardsen bundled the ball in from close range. However, the ball was deemed not to have fully crossed the line. Initially, goal-line technology provided no confirmation, and shortly after, the VAR also chose not to intervene.
The first half saw little further action, with Union Saint-Gilloise having two goals correctly disallowed.
Ajax emerged much stronger in the second half and was duly rewarded. In the 59th minute, Christian Rasmussen made it 0-1. Kian Fitz-Jim spotted Edvardsen free on the left and played a precise pass to Rasmussen, who struck beautifully first-time from just outside the box: 0-1.
Just over seventy minutes in, Jorthy Mokio doubled the lead in stunning fashion. Following an Ajax corner, the Belgian side initially cleared the danger, but Mokio was waiting at the edge of the penalty area to unleash a powerful strike. The 16-year-old Belgian placed the ball perfectly into the bottom left corner, sealing a great night for Ajax.
