The match had a furious start with a massive chance for Brian Brobbey. Faced with an open goal, the striker shot wide. A short time later, Heracles did make it 1-0 with Luka Kulenović. Davy Klaassen responded to the setback, making it 1-1.

Ajax had little time to enjoy it. After a bad lead pass from Josip Šutalo, Mario Engels made an attempt from his own half. And with success: his lob outfoxed Remko Pasveer. Once again, Ajax answered quickly with 2-2 from Bertrand Traoré before half-time.

In the second half, both teams kept scoring at a brisk rate. For the first time in the match, Ajax took the lead. Substitute Weghorst's header found the mark. Now it was Heracles had a that responded quickly: fifteen minutes before the final whistle, Kulenović's shot made it 3-3.

The grand finale was for Ajax. Weghorst drew a penalty, which he took himself, firing down the middle and into the mesh to make it 3-4. The home team ended the match with ten men after a red card for Brian de Keersmaecker.
