Ajax started the Eredivisie clash without the suspended Edson Álvarez. Calvin Bassey replaced the Mexican in the heart of the defense. With one change in the team in comparison to the home match against FC Emmen, Ajax struggled in the first phase of the match. Within fifteen minutes, the Ajax players conceded a goal after a header from Luuk de Jong: 1-0.

Later on in the first half, the home team granted Ajax the ball. However, John Heitinga’s team used their ball possession to a bare minimum. Really dangerous moments in front of the rival’s goal didn’t happen, which meant Ajax went into the dressing rooms 1-0 behind.

After a disappointing first half, Heitinga decided to make a change in the attack. Brian Brobbey entered the field, substituting Bassey. Florian Grillitsch and Dusan Tadic both dropped back a line.

The substitution did not ignite the desired change. Shortly after the break, PSV scored the 2-0 after a penalty taken by Xavi Simons. A little while later, a PSV supporter threw a cup of beer in the direction of Steven Berghuis, after which the match got paused.

Ajax was close to scoring in the remaining minutes of the match. Kenneth Taylor took a daring distance shot, which bounced off both the poles’ sides. On the other side of the pitch, the home team managed to score again. Ten minutes before the end of the match, De Jong made the 3-0 via Grillitsch his leg. This was the final score in Eindhoven.
