Ajax know their eight opponents in the UEFA Champions League

The eight opponents of the League Phase of the UEFA Champions League have been announced. The draw on Thursday evening paired the Amsterdam-based team with Inter, Chelsea, Benfica, Villarreal CF, Olympiakos, Olympique Marseille, Galatasaray and FK Qarabağ. More details on the fixture list and ticket sales will follow.

Ajax were placed in pot three and have been matched with two opponents from each pot.

The Amsterdammers will play at home against Inter, Benfica, Olympiakos, and Galatasaray and away against Chelsea FC, Villarreal CF, Olympique Marseille, and FK Qarabağ. UEFA will announce the full fixture schedule on Saturday. The opening round of matches will be played on September 16, 17, or 18. 

After the League Phase, the top eight teams will progress directly to the round of 16. Clubs finishing ninth to 24th will compete for a place in the last sixteen. The teams ending 25th to 36th will be eliminated.

Ajax have also turned their second home match of the season into a win. The Amsterdammers beat Heracles 2-0. Steven Berghuis scored after just over half an hour of play, after which Wout Weghorst decided the match deep in the second half, bringing the same scoreline to the board as against Telstar.
